"Happy Birthday Dr. Stompro!" was the message to me. Birthdays and anniversaries have always been important for me to celebrate with my staff and they have reciprocated in a big way. My amazing staff went out of their way and celebrated with all homemade food and goodies, making this a very special day indeed. Anniversaries are even bigger at the office because it signifies the longevity that I have with my employees. I have employees that have been at my practice for 20 years, 10, years, 8 years, and lots of employees with 5 years of service. Building a family atmosphere practice has always been my goal and I have achieved that with just the right mix of woman. So, to my amazing staff, thank you for the Happy Birthday you have extended to me!

Every morning plastic surgeon Brett Stompro begins his day at his Danville office with thoughts of tummy tucks, eyebrow lifts, and the ever-popular rhinoplasties.

By mid-afternoons in the fall he’s concentrating on three-step drops, cover-two zones and pulling guards as an assistant varsity football coach at California High School in San Ramon.

“It’s easy to switch gears,” Dr. Stompro says. “It’s two different worlds. Ninety-eight percent of my patients are women and are treated with loads of TLC. In the afternoons…well let’s just say that young men need to know you mean business.”

Dr. Stompro opened his doors in Blackhawk Medical Center in 1994 and started to work for the Cal High football program in 2006. In at least one instance, the two different worlds crossed. “The mother of one of my players had been in my care. After practice one day she said to her son, ‘I see Dr. Stompro is one of your coaches, isn’t he nice?’ The player said, ‘No, he’s not nice…and he cusses, too.’”

Before entering medicine, Stompro’s career as a star quarterback for San Leandro High School earned him a high school hall of fame designation and numerous awards. He also earned two varsity letters as the centerfielder for the San Leandro baseball team.

“Coaching satisfies my competitive thirst,” he says. “It’s as close as you can get to playing. Every achievement I’ve had has been the result of hard work and not accepting failure.

“I got into plastic surgery and coaching for similar reasons. I love helping people be everything they can be and seeing them achieve their dreams.”

Dr. Stompro’s duties at Cal include coaching the quarterbacks, the linebackers and special teams. “Our quarterbacks have done well,” Stompro says. “We may not have some of the gifted passers that Monte Vista and San Ramon have, but we’re efficient. Our quarterback ratings are among the highest in the East Bay, and our touchdown to interception ratio is consistently one of the best in the region. That measure is the number one predictor of success as an offense. Coach (Eric) Billeci’s play calling has also been great.”

Dr. Stompro clearly takes pride in all his work. He got into plastic surgery because it merged his interest in medicine with a talent he has for sculpting. “It was like combining my vocation and my avocation,” he said.

The results in plastic surgery are often striking, as are those he achieves with young men. “I love taking a player who may not have played much as a freshman, and work with him within and outside practice to hone his skills and make him successful.”

Future Cal High star quarterback Drew Reil was relegated to playing in the “fifth quarter” of frosh games in 2007 after the scoreboard was turned off. With Dr. Stompro’s help, by the time Reil was a senior in 2010 he led Cal to a 12-2 record, breaking records along the way.

The schedule Dr. Stompro keeps every week this fall is daunting. He greets patients at about 7 a.m. and mixes surgical procedures with office work depending on the day. He leaves for Cal at 2:30 p.m. and is on the field for practice from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. On Thursdays the team has a dinner that runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Fridays games and post-game analysis can run past midnight. Finally they return to host the weekly Sunday night coaches’ game planning dinner.

“I’m a lucky guy,” says Dr. Stompro. “In my medical school yearbook I said I wanted to be a plastic surgeon, coach football and live on a golf course. I got two out of three.” And as the saying goes, two out of three ain’t bad.

At my office, we spend time “educating” the patient on what surgical and nonsurgical procedures that they could benefit from.  Call into the office and talk with one of our medispa specialists and see if you would benefit from Botox/Dysport to relax those stubborn muscles between your eyebrows or the wrinkles at the corners of your eyes called “crowsfeet”.  Also, a filler like Juvederm/Restylane/Perlane may help you in filling in the lines that get deep going from the corners of your nose to the edge of your mouth.  These treatments can really keep the wrinkles at bay. 5 Leadership Lessons Learned From Warriors

Nobody saw it coming.

A rookie head coach. A team with plenty of young talent, but which wasn't truly battle-tested. An organization that hadn't won a championship in 40 years.

How did the Golden State Warriors make the jump from good team to NBA champion?

Here are five leadership lessons you can take and apply to your own business.

1. Listen to your employees. All of them.
2. Make decisions that are best for the team. Not the individual.
3. Keep confident.
4. Don't forget to have fun.
5. Set the bar high.

Remember 9-11
Remembering 9/11
Today the United States will mark the 14th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks that claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people Friday with memorial events reflecting grief, loss and anger. On Sept. 11, 2001, al Qaeda terrorists hijacked four passenger planes, crashing them into the north and south towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Virginia and a field in Pennsylvania.

Sept. 11, 2001, brought Americans closer, however briefly, as many looked to one another for strength, courage and comfort. Below is a poem written by a New York classroom one year after 9-11

List of “Don’t Forgets” and “Remembers”

Before September 11th, we would wake up with a list of “Don’t Forgets”
Don’t forget to wash your face
Don’t forget to brush your teeth
Don’t forget to do your homework
Don’t forget to wear your jacket
Don’t forget to clean your room
Don’t forget to take a bath

After September 11th, we wake up with a list of “Remembers”
Remember to greet the sun each morning
Remember to enjoy every meal
Remember to thank your parents for their hard work
Remember to honor those who keep you safe
Remember to value each person you meet
Remember to respect other’s beliefs

7 Lucky Facts about St. Patrick’s Day

Have you ever wondered…

Why should I wear green? What is a leprechaun? Are Irish people really lucky? Is green beer safe to drink? You’re in luck.

1. Luck of the Irish?
Many St. Patrick’s Day traditions revolve around luck. Ironically, the Irish have been very unlucky people as history will tell. The phrase “luck of the Irish” can be traced in the 1900’s during the US gold rush where a high number of Irish people found gold and silver. Since Irish immigrants were viewed as incapable any success was deemed as luck, hence “luck of the Irish.”

2. Lucky number 7
A rainbow has 7 easily distinguishable colors. Both the rainbow and the number 7 are symbols of luck around the world in slot machines, triple sevens means you’ve hit the jackpot…your own pot of gold.

3. Special shamrocks
3-leaf clover – according to Christian legend, St. Patrick used the 3 leaf clover to teach the Irish pagans about the trinity.

4. Other Lucky Charms
Horseshoe – hang a horseshoe over your doorway – if you hang it “u” side down the luck will poor out.

5. Green: Is it lucky?
In the 19th century, green became a symbol of Ireland (also called “The Emerald Isle”). Wearing green is patriotic, and considered lucky especially on St. Patrick’s Day. The tradition of pinching those not wearing green began in Ireland many years ago. To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, Chicago dyes the Chicago River green for the day, and many pubs serves green beer as a tradition. Don’t worry, it’s safe to drink.

6. Lucky Leprechauns
Root: leipreachan (pigmy or fairy) luchrupan (small body), or leath bhrogan (shoe maker). The Irish folklore, the Leprechauns are cranky fairies who mend the shoes of the other fairies. They have magical powers and delight in mischief and trickery, which they use to guard their fabled treasures. If you can catch a Leprechaun he must grant 3 wishes. Good Luck!

7. Kiss the what?
There is a stone of legend called “the Blarney Stone” which is set in the wall of a castle in the Irish village of Blarney. The stone is said to have magical powers, and whoever kisses the stone will have power of persuasion. Many Scottish kinds were crowned over the fated stone because it was believed to have special powers. Best to keep your kiss to a small peck, since millions of people have kissed this stone.
